Girls in STEM at Tulane (GiST)

GiST is a program for girls in 5th through 8th grade which provides a space to explore STEM fields and meet female STEM scientists. Since beginning at Tulane, each semester I have been in residence I have led an interactive workshop in primatology with GiST. I enjoy working with youth and sharing my research, especially with an interested audience such as this group. As the girls come back year after year we are working on presenting a new workshop each year that holds the interest of both first-time attendees and return students.

If you are a teacher or work with youth that might be interested in hearing from and talking to a primatologist, please feel free to contact me and I would love to come to your classroom. I am always excited to talk about my research and how I became interested in science, as well as answer questions.

MentorNOLA with Each One Save One

While I am in residence at Tulane University I mentor a fourth grade girl at SciTech Academy through MentorNOLA, a registered non-profit dedicated to empowering children. We enjoy doing art projects, homework, small science experiments, and reading together.
One-on-one mentor with AmeriCorps

I volunteered with a pilot program run by AmeriCorps at Bellevue Elementary School in Santa Rosa, CA. I met individually with students who were struggling emotionally, socially, and academically and provided each child a safe environment to talk and play with an adult role model. I led guided exercises that encouraged them to think about present and future goals, how to deal with difficult situations in their lives, and how to have successful relationships. I also tutored these students and others in the hours that I was not mentoring one-on-one.

Volunteer coordinator and animal care-taker with Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi, Boliva

I was responsible for the orientation and training of new volunteers as well as caring for a variety of semi-wild animals, including tufted capuchins (Sapajus apella) and pumas (Puma concolor). I became fluent in Spanish during this time, which has been especially helpful at my field site in Costa Rica.
